Disable Tab Hover Cards Image Thumbnails in Microsoft Edge

If you want to disable or remove preview images or thumbnails from tab hover cards in Microsoft Edge web browser, this article will help you.

Some readers reported that when they upgraded to the latest version of Microsoft Edge browser, the preview image feature was automatically activated on tab hover cards. Now whenever they move the mouse cursor over a tab, Microsoft Edge displays a live preview image or small website thumbnail inside the tab hover card.

They told us that the preview image was not displayed in previous versions of Microsoft Edge in their devices. The feature was suddenly added after updating the web browser.

Following screenshot shows the tab hover card preview image feature available in Microsoft Edge web browser:

Preview image feature in tab hover card is not a new feature. It was available in other Chromium-based web browsers since long time. Google Chrome and Opera browsers already provide this feature.

If you don’t like the preview image feature and want to get rid of it, this article will help you.

Following methods will help you in disabling or removing preview image or webpage thumbnails from tab hover cards in Microsoft Edge web browser:

METHOD 1: Disable Tab Preview on Hover Using Microsoft Edge Settings

Microsoft has provided a built-in option on Edge Settings page to quickly turn on/off the preview image feature on tab hover cards in the web browser. You can easily enable or disable the tab hover cards preview image in your web browser as mentioned in following steps:

STEP 1: Click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option from the main menu. Alternatively, you can directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

STEP 2: Now go to Appearance tab and in right-side pane, scroll down and under Customize toolbar section, look for following toggle option:

Just set the toggle option to OFF i.e. disable the toggle button to disable tab preview images feature.

PS: In future, if you want to enable the new tab preview image feature again, enable the above mentioned toggle option.

METHOD 2: Disable Tab Hover Card Image Using Microsoft Edge Flags Page

There is also a hidden secret preference/flag available to enable or disable the tab hover card preview image feature in Microsoft Edge. You can modify this secret preference to disable the feature in Edge using following steps:

STEP 1: Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

STEP 2: Now type hover in the “Search flags” box.

Look for following option on the page:

Shows a preview image in tab hover cards, if tab hover cards are enabled. – Mac, Windows, Linux

STEP 3: To disable preview image or thumbnail on tab hover cards in Edge, select Disabled from the drop-down box for the above mentioned option.

STEP 4: Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

After restarting Edge, you’ll no longer see preview images on tab hover cards.

PS: If you decide to restore preview image feature in Edge, select Default or Enabled option from the drop-down box for above mentioned option on edge://flags page and restart the browser.
