Firefox to Get Tab Groups, Vertical Tabs, AI Features and More

All other popular web browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge come with a native or built-in profile management tool which assists users in creating multiple profiles in the web browser. On the other hand, Firefox comes with a basic profile management system. Advanced users are required to use ‘-P‘ command-line parameter to manage browser profiles.

Although Firefox comes with a built-in profile management page which can be accessed using about:profiles URL in the address bar but it’s very basic and doesn’t provide advanced features to users. The upcoming native profile manager will be accessible directly from the main menu and will provide more advanced features to create and organize separate profiles for different requirements such as home, office, school, etc.

The upcoming profile manager tool will also get a dedicated page which will be accessible using about:profilemanager URL. At the moment, if you try to access the URL, you get an empty page containing “Hello world – New Profiles” headline as shown in following screenshot:

Mozilla team is working on the profile manager feature and the work is still in progress, that’s why the profile manager page is not fully functional.

Mozilla team has implemented the upcoming improved profile manager feature in Firefox 126.0 and later versions but the feature is not enabled by default. Since Mozilla team is still working on the feature, it’s hidden and deactivated for general users.

Advanced users can modify a hidden secret preference/flag to activate and enable the upcoming profile manager feature right now in Firefox web browser.

If you also want to enable and test drive the new profile manager feature in your Firefox browser, following steps will help you:

STEP 1: Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the address bar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “Accept the Risk and Continue” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

STEP 2: Now type profiles inside the preference search box and look for following preference:

browser.profiles.enabled

STEP 3: The preference decides whether the new profile manager feature should be enabled or not.

By default, the preference value is set to false which means the profile manager feature is disabled in Firefox.

To activate and enable the profile manager feature, double-click on the preference and it’ll change its value to True. Alternatively, you can click on the Toggle icon given next to the preference name to modify it.
