If Twitter or X social networking website suddenly stopped working in Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge web browsers in your computer and you are getting “Something went wrong, but don’t fret” error message, this article will help you in fixing the issue and making the website opening again in your favorite web browser.

Today when I tried to open Twitter website in my Firefox web browser, it crashed and displayed following error message:

Something went wrong, but don’t fret – let’s give it another shot.

A “Try again” button was present on the page. Clicking on the button didn’t help and displayed the same error page.

I tried Microsoft Edge web browser which comes preinstalled or bundled with Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems and I received similar error message:

Something went wrong, but don’t fret – it’s not your fault.

A “Refresh” button was given on the page. Again clicking on the button didn’t work and kept displaying the same error page.

The website worked fine in other web browsers such as Google Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi. Only Firefox and Edge browsers were facing issues with Twitter website.

All other websites were opening properly in Firefox and Edge. So there was no issue in the web browsers, Internet connection or the computer system.

PROBLEM REASON: Tracking Protection Causing Twitter or X Website Issue in Firefox and Edge

Today Twitter website URL was permanently changed from twitter.com to x.com and all references to twitter.com started redirecting to x.com automatically. Elon Musk also officially announced about it using this Tweet. When the user opens Twitter website, a small greeting banner is displayed at the bottom with the message “Welcome to x.com. We are letting you know that we are changing our URL”.

The new x.com domain is having compatibility issues with enhanced or strict tracking protection feature available in almost all web browsers. So if the tracking protection feature is enabled in a web browser specially Firefox and Edge, Twitter website will not work and display error messages.

The feature is known as Enhanced tracking protection (strict mode) in Firefox and Strict tracking prevention in Microsoft Edge.

PROBLEM SOLUTION: Disable Tracking Protection in Firefox and Edge to Fix Twitter Website Issue

If you want to open and access Twitter or X website in Firefox and Edge browsers, you’ll need to disable or turn off tracking protection feature in your web browser and the website will start opening again.

You don’t need to disable the feature for all websites, you can just turn off the feature for Twitter (X) website only using following steps:

1. Disable Tracking Protection in Mozilla Firefox to Fix Twitter Website

If you are using Firefox web browser and want to fix Twitter (X) website opening issue, following steps will help you:

STEP 1: Open Twitter or X website in Firefox and click on the Shield icon present at the left-side corner of the address bar.

STEP 2: Now disable or turn off “Enhanced Tracking Protection” toggle option.

If you are using Microsoft Edge web browser and want to fix Twitter (X) website opening issue, following steps will help you:

STEP 1: Open Twitter or X website in Edge and click on the Lock icon present at the left-side corner of the address bar.

STEP 2: Now disable or turn off “Tracking prevention for this site (Strict)” toggle option.

  1. Hello Vishal, Thank you for this fix for Edge. Worked the moment I finished your instruction. Best regards.

  2. So if you want to use X, you have no choice but to accept tracking!!!! what have they done with our free world?

  3. I still have issues with being non responsive even after turning off blocking tracking. Any other suggestions?

  4. website opened, but nothing is showing. has Retry everywhere. Any other suggestions? I at least got to the website. I’m not having any problems with app, but this is past annoying

  5. still not working with edge ! as is a lot of the commentary here. I don’t understand your solution. “Open Twitter or X website in Edge”. But that’s the problem ! I CAN’T open the website in edge; I get the error message

  6. still not working in EDGE…anybody have any suggestions ? I can’t even get the X to open

  7. Unfortunately, didn’t work for me running Firefox v126.0 in Windows 11 64-bit machine.
    Anything else we can try?

  8. To anyone who is still facing the issue, the solution is disable No-Tracking and then canceling the reload request from the page, since it will be in loop for a couple of minutes. After that, you will be able to see the login button in the bottom of the page. Proceed to login normally and after that, you should enable it (no-tracking) again, since it created successfully the session token, it will guarantee proper working again.

  9. UPDATE:
For me, disabling Enhanced Tracking Protection didn’t solve the problem.
What did solve the issue was disabling the “Disconnect” Firefox add-on. As soon as I unblocked the Twitter/X website id this add-no, the website loaded normally.
Hope this helps some folks that are still struggling with this issue!

  10. Please add to your knowledge base that it is ALL protection from any product, not just specifically X/Twitter protection. This means you need to turn off any provider’s tracking or VPN. Thanks ever so.

  11. I promised I’d let you know if I was able to get into the PC platform of X. Since I’d logged out of my providers tracking service yesterday, I was surprised that my accounts could get past the screen frames this morning. I then went into tracking and it apparently opens at startup. So people also need to make sure that their tracking doesn’t open at startup OR just open tracking, see that it is enabled again and log out. Then, in both Edge with MS Chrome and with Google Chrome, you see all functions normal in X. Yes, agreed that when X migrated to its “new” PC platform, it is now having “compatibility” issues with trackers. For 2 reasons: It must be affecting the ads that are a part of the revenue sharing mechanism so that their people using that aren’t making much and because X no longer, itself, wants to offer ANY “protection” because it impedes whatever monetization IT receives. Please feel free to read and delete. Just wanted you to be aware because it certainly affects your business too. Keep your online service going, please, because it’s one of the very few places where average users can get a more complete picture of why our systems do what the do, even when it’s nonsensical.

  12. ** FOUND SOLUTION **
It’s been 5 days I have not been able to use Firefox to log-in Twitter. It hangs in a loop trying to load the pop-up window to sign-in. The same in Brave Browser. No Problem in Microsoft Edge.
Turning Off the Enhanced Protection in Firefox by the search top window for Twitter HAD NO EFFECT. Still unable to sign-in Twitter.
I went to settings on Firefox and turn off ALL PROTECTION options under Browser Privacy ==> Same problem Unable to sign-in on Twitter.
Started to turn-Off ALL Extensions for Firefox ===> Problem Solved -Able to Sign-in Twitter

Started to TURN-On the Extensions ,one-by-one. I have quite a few Privacy Extensions Ghostery,Privacy Badger,Google Analytics Blocker,Start Page Private Search Engine,Winscribe Proxy Add Blocker,DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Plus other Translate Pages etc. => Twitter worked with all these Extensions turn-On PLUS WITH Firefox Enhanced Protection Turn-on for Twitter (contrary to the above solution) Including with the Firefox Settings Strict for Privacy
In my case the culprit was an extension called StartPage Privacy Protection
You can try to systematically Turn-On & Off the extensions & clearing your cookies and reloading Twitter to see what see what is interfering
    -Good Luck-

  13. Sp33dy comment May 22, 2024 at 3:26 pm solved it for me! I’m delighted –

Sp33dy “For me, disabling Enhanced Tracking Protection didn’t solve the problem.” Nor me.
Sp33dy “What did solve the issue was disabling the “Disconnect” Firefox add-on.” Me too!

Many thanks everyone – it’s good to read all possible solutions

  14. In my case I tried all the fixes mentioned here and still no joy. Then I went through my Edge extensions and turned off Norton Anti-Tracking and it started working. There’s an option to allow trackers for that specific website, and once I chose that option, I have X back.
