How to Enable or Disable Split Screen Mode in Opera Browser

Opera web browser 113.0 and later versions come with a new feature called Split Screen to open two tabs side-by-side inside a single browser window. This article will help you in enabling or disabling Split Screen Mode in Opera browser.

Split Screen mode is one of the new features which will be a part of the upcoming Opera One R2 web browser and Opera team has already implemented Split Screen feature in the latest Opera 113.0 stable version.

What is Split Screen Mode in Opera Web Browser?

Split Screen feature helps users in opening or accessing two tabs side-by-side on a single browser screen. Following screenshot shows Split Screen mode enabled with two tabs running side-by-side in Opera browser’s stable version:

To launch a tab in Split Screen mode, simply click on a tab and drag it downwards and Opera will automatically display Split Screen window. Now you can drop the selected tab on the left or right side of the split screen window alongside the current tab.

To exit from the Split Screen mode, right-click inside any tab or right-click on the tab header and select “Exit Split Screen” option from the context menu.

By default, Split Screen mode feature is deactivated or disabled in Opera browser and interested users need to modify a hidden secret preference/flag to activate and enable it. In this article, we’ll share the secret trick to enable Split Screen mode feature in Opera stable version right now.

How to Activate or Deactivate Split Screen Mode Feature in Opera Web Browser?

Opera team has provided a secret preference/flag that can be used to add or remove Split Screen mode feature in Opera web browser.

Following steps will help you in modifying this secret preference in Opera browser:

STEP 1: Launch Opera web browser and type opera://flags in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the hidden secret advanced configuration page called “Experiments“.

STEP 2: Now click inside “Search flags” text box and type Split. It’ll show following option in the result:

STEP 3: To enable the new Split Screen feature in Opera web browser, select “Enabled” from the drop-down box.

To disable the new Split Screen feature in Opera web browser, select “Disabled” from the drop-down box.

STEP 4: Opera will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Opera.

That’s it. After restarting the browser, the Split Screen feature will be activated or deactivated in your browser based upon the value of the above mentioned preference.

How to Enable or Disable Split Screen Mode Feature Using Opera Browser Settings?

If the above mentioned preference/flag is set to enabled, Opera Settings page displays a new toggle option to enable or disable Split Screen mode quickly and easily.

You can set this new toggle option to on or off to enable or disable the new Split Screen feature in your web browser:

STEP 1: Launch Opera web browser, click on Opera Menu button and then click on Settings option. Alternatively you can directly launch Settings page by pressing Alt+P keys together.

STEP 2: Now click on “Features” tab or section present in left-sidebar.

STEP 3: In right-side pane, scroll down a little and you’ll see “Split Screen” section.

STEP 4: To disable Split Screen feature in your web browser, set the toggle button given next to “Enable split screen” option to OFF.

To enable Split Screen feature in your web browser, set the toggle button given next to “Enable split screen” option to ON.

It’ll immediately enable/disable the Split Screen feature in your web browser based upon the toggle option status.

PS: If you want to keep Split Screen feature enabled but want to block or disable the drag-n-drop functionality only, you can set the toggle option “Enable creating a split screen by drag and drop” to OFF.

At the moment, only drag-n-drop method has been implemented to launch Split Screen mode. In future, more options such as context menu option, toolbar button will be added to access split screen feature.
