How to Use New Call Recording Feature in iPhone (iOS18 and Later)

Finally Apple has added the much awaited and the most requested feature “Call recording” to the iPhone. The new iOS 18.0 and later versions come with native or built-in call recording feature in Phone app that allows iPhone users to record any phone call easily without using any 3rd party app or hardware device.

Following image shows call recording feature enabled and working on our iPhone during a phone call:

Important Things to Know About Native Call Recording in iPhone

Here are some important things to know about the new call recording feature introduced in iPhone:

1. Call recording feature is available to all iPhone models (including older phones) upgraded to iOS 18 or later versions. We have tested it iPhone 12 Mini device without issues.

2. Call recording feature is NOT a part of the new Apple Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence) tool.

3. Since call recording is a native or built-in feature, users don’t need to install any extra app or mods in their phones.

4. Call recording is NOT automatic. You need to manually start the call recording by tapping on the call recording icon during a phone call.

5. Once you start call recording, a voice prompt “This call will be recorded” is played followed by a beep sound to alert other people on the call about the call recording.

6. The call recording takes 3 seconds time in starting, so you might lose a few seconds important conversation in the recorded call.

7. Call recording works on both incoming and outgoing calls.

8. Recorded phone calls are stored and displayed in Notes app.

PS: When call recording feature was announced by Apple, it seemed that the call recording will be a part of Apple Intelligence and will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, the new iPhone 16 series and later phones only. But it’s now clear that call recording has nothing to do with Apple Intelligence and can be used in any iPhone model on iOS 18 and later versions.

If you want to learn how the new native call recording feature works in iPhone, following steps will help you:

STEP 1: Upgrade to iOS 18 or Later Version in Your iPhone

Upgrade your iPhone to the new iOS 18 or later versions to activate and enable the new call recording feature. If you do not upgrade to iOS 18 or later, you’ll need to depend upon the old workarounds like 3-way call conference, 3rd party call recording apps, etc to record a call as mentioned in this article.

You can upgrade to iOS18 or later by going to Settings -> General -> Software Update page.

STEP 2: Enable Call Recording Option in Phone Settings

Once you install the iOS 18 or later version in your device, the call recording feature will be automatically added to the Phone app.

You can manually check and confirm the call recording feature using Settings app. Open Settings in your iPhone and navigate to Apps -> Phone section.

Now you’ll see new “Call Recording” option listed on the screen as shown in following screenshot:

The call recording option is enabled i.e. set to ON by default.

PS: If the call recording feature is not listed in your iPhone, you’ll need to wait for the next iOS 18.1 update and it’ll bring the call recording functionality to your iPhone.

STEP 3: Record a Call Using Call Recording Icon on Screen

Now you are ready to record any phone call in your iPhone. When you make a call or receive a call, look for the call recording icon present on the top-left corner of the call screen.

Tap on the icon and the call recording will start after 3 seconds. The other parties on the call will listen a notification prompt about the call recording.

If you want, you can stop the call recording during the call by tapping on the stop recording icon appearing on the call screen.

When you disconnect the call, the call recording will be automatically saved to Notes app. iPhone displays a notification “View saved call” to allow users to directly listen or check the call recording.

You can also manually open Notes app to view the recorded call.

That’s it. This is how the new call recording works in iPhone.

Now all iPhone users can enjoy the call recording feature without relying on 3rd party apps and tools. Call recording feature is no longer exclusive to Google Android smartphones.

We hope that Apple will add extra options to customize and control the call recording functionality in future iOS versions. New options to enable automatic call recording and disable voice prompt will please many iPhone users.
