STEP 2: After downloading the ZIP file, extract it using 7-Zip or other file archive software and look for following file:

MsftRecoveryToolForCS.ps1

This is the main recovery tool which will help you in fixing your broken Windows PC. MsftRecoveryToolForCS.ps1 is actually a PowerShell (PS) script that contains commands to download required files and create bootable USB drive.

STEP 3: Launch PowerShell as Administrator by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting “Terminal (Admin)” or “PowerShell (Admin)” option.

STEP 4: Now navigate to the extracted folder using CD command and run ./MsftRecoveryToolForCS.ps1 command.

NOTE: If you get “File cannot be loaded because running scripts is disabled on this system” error message, run following command first:

Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned

Now run ./MsftRecoveryToolForCS.ps1 command again and it should work.

PowerShell will start downloading and installing Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) that may take a few minutes to complete.

PS: PowerShell might prompt you to optionally select a driver directory to import the image. You can skip the step by selecting “N” to save time.

STEP 5: After downloading the required files, the tool will ask you to attach a USB drive to your system and provide the flash drive letter.

Attach a USB drive to your computer. The capacity of the USB drive should be at least 1 GB or more.

Once the USB drive is created, remove the USB drive.

STEP 6: Now insert the USB drive to the impacted i.e. broken device and reboot or start the device.

STEP 7: During restart, keep pressing F12 key to boot into BIOS boot menu screen. Different brand computers require different key press to access BIOS boot menu. In most of the brands, F12 key is used. If it doesn’t work, you can try pressing F10 key.
