Tip: Enable Weather Widget on New Tab Page in Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla team is working on a brand new Weather widget for the New Tab page (NTP) in Firefox web browser. This new weather widget will display the live weather forecast information for the user’s region on the new tab page and Homepage in Mozilla Firefox.

The weather widget development has been started and a testing version of the widget can be activated and enabled right now in Firefox stable as well as Nightly versions.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to add and enable the upcoming weather widget on new tab page and homepage in Mozilla Firefox web browser right now.

Sometimes the weather widget shows “Weather data is not available right now” error message on the new tab page. It seems Mozilla is testing with the server details used by the weather widget to fetch weather forecast information.

Following screenshot shows the error message displayed by the weather widget on the new tab page in Firefox:

If you remember, recently Mozilla team added similar weather forecast information card on the drop-down suggestions list of the address bar. We shared exclusive information about it in following article:

Now Mozilla is going to add weather forecast information card on the new tab page and homepage (also known as start page or speed dial page) in future versions of Firefox web browser.

NOTE: Opera web browser also comes with weather widget on the New Tab page. Check out this article to read details.

Mozilla team has started working on the NTP weather widget and the work is still in progress, that’s why the weather widget might not be fully functional. Since Mozilla team is still working on the feature, it’s hidden and deactivated for general users.

Advanced users can modify a hidden secret preference/flag to activate and enable the upcoming weather widget feature right now in Firefox web browser.

If you also want to enable and test drive the new tab page weather widget feature in your Firefox browser, following steps will help you:

STEP 1: Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the address bar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “Accept the Risk and Continue” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

STEP 2: Now type showweather inside the preference search box and look for following preferences:

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.showWeather

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.system.showWeather

STEP 3: These preferences decide whether the weather widget should be visible on the new tab page or not.

To activate and enable the weather widget on new tab page, set the value of both the preferences to True. If the value of any preference is set to false, double-click on the preference and it’ll change its value to True. Alternatively, you can click on the Toggle icon given next to the preference name to modify it.

It’ll immediately turn on the weather widget on the new tab page in your web browser.

PS: If you want to disable the weather widget in future, set the above mentioned preferences to false again.

Now open a new tab page by pressing Ctrl+T keys together or by clicking on the new tab button in tab bar and you’ll see the new weather widget displaying at the top-left corner of the page.

You can quickly show/hide the weather widget on new tab page by changing the settings. Click on the gear or cog wheel (personalize new tab) icon given at the top-right corner of the new tab page to open settings pane.

You’ll see a new dedicated toggle button to enable/disable weather widget on the new tab page as shown in following screenshot:

The same toggle option is also present on the main Firefox Settings page. Open about:preferences page and go to Home section or tab and you’ll see the same Weather toggle button available to modify:
