Recently Microsoft started testing a new native app version of Copilot in Windows 11 Insider Preview builds. Microsoft was trying to replace the Copilot fly-out with a standalone app. Windows 11 builds such as 26080 (Dev), 26120 (Dev), 26227 (Canary) and later builds came with the new Copilot app bundled for testing purposes.
Microsoft also released the new Copilot app in the recent Windows 11 24H2 feature update that came preinstalled with new Copilot+ PCs.
Now Microsoft has started rolling out the new Copilot app to all Windows 11 devices via monthly updates. We received the new Copilot app in our Windows 11 23H2 device (build 22631.4037).
Following screenshot shows the new Copilot app live in action in Windows 11 operating system:
The new Copilot app works like a normal Windows 11 Store or UWP app such as Mail, Calculator, Notepad, etc. You can move, resize or snap the new Copilot app similar to other installed apps.
The Copilot app is actually a PWA (Progressive Web App) i.e. a web-powered version of Copilot. It uses the built-in msedgewebview2.exe (Microsoft Edge Web View) platform available in Windows 11.
If you open Microsoft Edge web browser and go to edge://apps/ page, you’ll see Copilot app available under installed apps list as shown in following screenshot:
So basically Microsoft has developed Copilot app as a PWA similar to the new Outlook app.
IMPORTANT: Please note that the previous WIN+C hotkey to launch and access Copilot fly-out no longer works as Copilot has been transformed into a native app. The new Copilot+ PCs will ship with a dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard to direct open Copilot. Old device users can use WIN+(number position for Copilot icon pinned to the Taskbar) to open Copilot.
